On March 10th and 11th, 2025, Holzminden once again became a hub for sun protection expertise as professionals from research, development, and the cosmetics industry gathered for the DGK Fortbildungskurs “Sonnenschutzmittel.” Organized by the DGK e.V. Fachgruppe Sonnenschutz and conducted by DGK eVent GmbH, this workshop provided a deep dive into the latest advancements in sun protection testing methods.
The event opened with a series of expert-led presentations covering key aspects of sun protection. Dr. Mathias Rohr (Institute Dr. Schrader) introduced the in vivo SPF determination method (ISO 24444) and the innovative fresh-off-the-press HDRS method (ISO 23698), a non-invasive alternative gaining industry recognition. Dr. Elke Buck (Institute Dr. Schrader) provided insights into the in vitro double plate method (ISO 23675), while Dr. Stefan Benard (Institute Dr. Schrader) explored Chemiluminescence (ICL-S/H) as a tool for assessing oxidative stress.
Beyond SPF determination, the workshop addressed broader topics such as UVA protection, photochemistry, antioxidant effects, and environmental considerations for sun protection formulations. Renowned experts from all corners contributed to a well-rounded program that bridged scientific advancements with practical industry applications.
A highlight of the event was the hands-on demonstration session at Institute Dr. Schrader, where participants observed ICL-S, in vitro, and in vivo testing methods in practice. This interactive session allowed attendees to gain a firsthand understanding of cutting-edge evaluation techniques for sun protection products.
The workshop concluded with engaging discussions, reinforcing the importance of ongoing research and innovation in the field. We are grateful to all speakers and participants for making this event a success and look forward to future collaborations in advancing sun protection science.
