Current ISO Methods for Sun Protection Testing: Advances and Applications
On December 3, 2024, Holzminden became the focal point for sun protection product testing as interested professionals gathered for an exceptional workshop organized by the German Society for Scientific and Applied Cosmetics (DGK). This unique event, which provided a comprehensive overview of SPF determination methods, achieved full booking within just one day – a testament to the strong interest in advancements in this field.
The workshop commenced with a presentation by Dr. Polina Gulakova, who introduced the well-established in vivo determination method, ISO 24444. This method has long been regarded as the gold standard for assessing sun protection factors.
A highlight of the event was the presentation by Dr. Mathias Rohr from the Institute Dr. Schrader, who unveiled the innovative Hybrid Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (HDRS) method. Institute Dr. Schrader played a crucial role in the development of this technique, which represents a breakthrough in non-invasive, in vivo sun protection testing. HDRS method is anticipated to achieve ISO certification in early 2025 as ISO 23698 offers a reliable and future-oriented alternative to ISO 24444.
The HDRS method ensures the determination of SPF, UVA-PF, and critical wavelength, all without exposing test subjects’ skin to significant UV radiation doses. Its precision and practicality make it a robust alternative to traditional in vivo methods, while also addressing ethical concerns by minimizing UV exposure.
The day concluded with a session led by Dr. Florence Pouradier and Dr. Shirin Keyhanian, who introduced the in vitro double plate method (ISO 23675). Like HDRS, this method is poised to achieve ISO certification in parallel with ISO 23698.
The practical demonstrations of all three methods at the Dr. Schrader Institute provided participants with a rare opportunity to see these advanced techniques in action, further enriching their understanding.
Heartfelt thanks to Britta Klebon for organizing this remarkable event and to Bernd Herzog for his thorough introduction to the day’s activities.
